Common Wood Types

– Sold at home stores
– Most widely available
– Commonly used in furniture and finish carpentry

Pine – Softer wood, easily dents. Color is light but easily stains. Has more round knots  

Poplar – Greener color- smooth streaks – easily to work with – No knots

Oak – No knots – Harder and more solid – Medium dark color – Easy to stain

Cherry – Reddish brown color – Easy to work with

Maple – Lighter color 

Plywood – Sheet wood. Usually straighter than natural wood

2x Lumber – 2×2 , 2×4 , 2×6

What to look for when buying wood at home stores: 

  • boards are straight
  • boards are dry 
  • no visible cracks 
  • minimum knots

Storing Wood

– As wood dries wood can warp and bend 

 

– Keep wood in the same location it will be used

 

– Let wood completely dry before use to minimize wood movement after build is complete
