It attaches the base to the top

B

back saw
— a hand saw with a rigid spine along the back of the blade

      Backsaw Post

Baltic birch
baltic birch plywood
— A high-quality birch plywood made from veneer of equal thickness
It has no voids
used for furniture
also known as “Finnish birch.”
Unlike domestic plywood, such as “apple ply,” which comes in 4′ x 8′ sheets,

band saw
— a power saw good for cutting curves

bar clamp
— a clamping tool with a long bar used to clamp the larger projects

bench grinder
Power tool for sharpening and straightening tools
Also used to clean and polish metal

board foot — how wood is measured
Square 144 inches
1x1x1

bench plane— a plane with larger bottom and wider cutter e.g. smoothing plane, jack plane

bevel— a type of angled cut

————-

biscuit
— a piece of wood that is inserted and glued to an edge groove between two pieces of wood to be joined. It’s good for keeping wood aligned and glued together

biscuit jointer
— a power tool that cuts grooves in wood for using biscuit joints

biscuit joint
— Biscuits help align the faces during glue-up, especially with a longer panels like tabletops
.

block plane
— A small plane for trimming joints or end grain; the bevel on the cutter always faces up.
Low-angle versions excel at trimming end grain

board foot
— how wood length is measured

box joint
— aka fingerlap joint
straight, interlocking fingers

brad-point bit
brad-point bit — a twist drill having a center spur to guide the bit in an advancing pilot hole

C

Clamps

chamfer
chamfer — A beveled or grooved edge that is 45°

chop saw
chop saw – a nickname for a power miter saw

chuck — the part of a power drill that grips the shank of a bit or cutter

clamp
clamp — a tool to hold work in process

cleat
cleat — a narrow board or strip used as a support

combination square
combination square — An adjustable square that can measure 90° and 45° angles.

compound miter
compound miter — a tilted and angled cut

counterbore
counterbore — a technique of recessing a screw by drilling a hole larger than the head of the screw and then a smaller hole for the shank and thread

countersink
countersink — A technique for keeping wood screws from driving up out of wood. Keeping the surface flat

crosscut
crosscut — A cut perpendicular to the grain of a board

D

drill bit
Drill bit – used with drills
Come in different shapes and sizes

dado– (joinery) – dado is a joint or groove in wood that holds another prince of wood
-dado (n, v), dados (pl), dadoing (v) — A three-sided trench cut across the grain of a board
Used in making furniture

dowel
— a cylinder shape piece of wood used for making joints by inserting dowels into holes and gluing

dowel joint
— Dowels add strength and alignment benefits to what is normally considered a weak joint

drill press— a drilling tool that lets you drill down with accuracy’s and good pressure

E

enamel — type of wood finish.
Clear plastic like coating for wood protection

end grain — the end of a board where the pores are exposed

F

file
— the tool with rough surface used for sanding and shaping wood

file card
— a stiff brush used to clean files

—————

finger joint
— interlocking finger joints reinforce and align panel joints. – useful when joining boards end-grain to end-grain like when making continuous floorboards

fixed base router
— router whose base can’t be moved up or down during operation
can be adjusted prior to operation (opposite of “plunge router”)

Forstner bit
— A type of bit used to bore clean, flat-bottomed and generally larger holes

G

glue up

— The act of assembling parts with glue and clamps

gouge
— a chisel-like turning or carving tool with a curved edge

grain
— usually refers to texture, porosity or figuring of wood
The look and pattern of wood

grain pattern
— The look of of the wood grain; types include flat, straight, curly, quilted, rowed, mottled, crotch, cathedral, beeswing and bird’s eye

groove
— A three-sided trench cut with the grain of a board

groove joint
— The groove joint can be used to lock a thinner cabinet back or a drawer bottom
the groove captures the thinner piece in place without glue because the thin, solid-wood panel can expand and contract with changes in humidity

H

hacksaw
— a handsaw that holds a blade at both ends and has a handle at one end, usually used for cutting metals

hand plane — a type of cutting device that shaves wood with a blade held in place at a fairly steep angle; there are many kinds (block, bench, bullnose, spokeshave, router, scraper, rabbet)

Book 1 • Book about hand planes

hardwood
— the wood from any number of flowering, fruit- or nut-bearing trees
Walnut is considered a hardwood
Hardwood bents more easily

hole saw
— a type of saw with teeth arranged around the bottom of a cylinder used for cutting larger holes
these are used with power drills

hone
— to sharpen,
Hand planes blades get honed

housed
— when one part is enclosed fully or partially by another; a specific family of joints

I

inlay
— inserting smaller pieces into grooves cut in a workpiece

J

jack plane
— a medium-sized, general purpose plane

jig
— a device that aids in doing repetitive tasks consistently

jigsaw
— a power tool using a vertical, reciprocating blade; used for cutting different kinds of materials depending on the type of blade used
Good at making curved cuts

joinery
— connecting pieces of wood together through a variety of means, including using glue and mechanical fasteners,
the use of interlocking or corresponding wooden joints

jointer
— the usually-stationary shop machine that makes uniform, square surfaces by removing thin layers of material until the whole board is squared

jointer plane
— a type of plane used to square long edges
Type of hand plane
